- I would like to share a own experience and so maybe help other TOF patients. I had a first surgery to keep me alive in 1958 and total correction surgery at the age of 16 in 1967. I am now 59 and going on. I had two daughters that are now both over 30. My older daughter was born healthy but my second girl had also a congenital heart defect but much more serious than TOF. She didn't have the exit of the pulmonar artery and some other serious malformations of the heart. Her luck is that she was born 28 years after me and in Germany where the surgery was paid in full by the health care system that covers all citizens. She had the first surgery at 5 days after birth and two more later to adapt valves to a growing body. If anyone with a congenital heart defect intends to have children it may be good to consult statistics or advice about the possibility of also conceiving a child with a heart defect.
